Volunteer: Veteran-to-Veteran SupportVeterans have given a lot to our country and we thank you for your service! Veterans also seem to relate to each other in ways the average person cannot. At the end of life there is a lot that can be stirred up, memories dislodged, or old feelings re-awakened. At Gentiva Hospice we know that end-of-life is experienced differently by our veterans which is why we pair them with veteran hospice patients. By end-of-life we mean that these veterans have a terminal illness and are probably in their last year of life (but not always). As a veteran volunteer you will be matched with one veteran patient who will be your patient until he/she passes.
Pinning Ceremonies We will also do a veteran pinning ceremony for your veteran patient. He/She will be given a certificate and pinned. Meaningful words are spoken and the veteran patient and veteran volunteer both get a chance to share any stories about being in the service or what being a veteran has meant to them. We take some time to celebrate and honor the veterans and acknowledge their service and sacrifice for this country. Volunteer training and specialized veteran volunteer training is provided. Requirements: be a veteran at least 18 have car insurance pass a background check pass a drug test pass fingerprinting pass a physical TB test within the last year (we give them for free if you need)

Volunteer: CHAT Volunteer Board MemberCHAT, an established nonprofit organization with an amazing board, is looking to expand! For almost 45 years, CHAT has been giving children in need the gift of communication. Focused on inclusion and centered in social justice, CHAT provides life-changing speech therapy to individuals with few—if any—other options. Through our clinic, in schools, and in partnership with community nonprofits, we tailor services specifically to clients' needs and build on their strengths. Each CHAT client leaves able to communicate, in their preferred method, to their families, teachers, future employers, and the world around them. The position of board member is to support the work of CHAT and provide mission-based leadership, guidance, and strategic governance. We seek individuals who demonstrate commitment to the values and mission of CHAT, and personally connect to our work. We are looking for a corporate executive and/or community leader who has the ability and willingness to reach out to personal and professional networks and their corporate community on behalf of CHAT. Over the past several years, CHAT has materially increased work with families on Medicaid or needing scholarships for services, who struggle to find support elsewhere. We have also grown our community partnership work, removing barriers to access by bringing life changing literacy, executive functioning, and life skills programs into communities that need them. We need more board help to sustain this critical work! CHAT holds four hybrid quarterly board meetings that each board member should attend and participate in with the purpose of helping CHAT reach its annual fundraising goals and grow its impact. Board members also typically serve on one of CHAT's committees, that meet one to three times per quarter. Volunteer: Crafting & Creating for CatsJoin us for an on-your-own-time, fun virtual opportunity! Perfect for students who need service hours, too.
If you are a crafty person, you can support our rescue by creating toys for the cats in our rescue (and to send home with them when they are adopted!), crafts for our fundraising sales, enrichment items for the cats in our care, and more. We recently created a short workbook of suggested projects and ideas - check it out here! In addition, any funds earned from sales of donated items at craft fairs ore vents will be used to care for our existing cats and pay our vet bill, and this allows us to continue rescuing felines in need. If you have any experience with fundraising, or would like to help us generate ideas, please contact us - we'll be glad to have your input! Please visit our website, or ask any of our volunteers or adoption counselors if you have questions. Donations of various kinds are always accepted, including: food for foster cats, toys (no hazardous/swallow-possible parts please), crates, carriers (hard sided and/or top loaders preferred), etc. Chicagoland Animal Rescue, NFP is a small, all-volunteer cat rescue organization based out of the Downers Grove PetSmart at Butterfield & Finley Rd. Volunteer: Walk rescue dogs at our facility! We are constantly looking for more volunteers to take a little bit of time out of their day to help us get our resident dogs out of their kennels, go on walks, and play/socialize in our indoor play yard! Our facility typically houses 5 dogs at a time until we can move them into foster homes. Once we find foster homes for our pooches, they move out and more move in! We are there from 8am-11am every morning and 5pm-8pm every night. Volunteers do not have to do the whole shift. We require a commitment of 2 shifts per month. After completing 2 initial shifts at our facility, you will have the opportunity to take a dog out into the community on a field trip. Field trips give us great insight to our dogs outside of the shelter environment, and allow us to use that to find the right forever home for them!
PLEASE NOTE: At this time we're not accepting community service hours.

Inkind: Host a Donation Drive to #fosterloveIt is a huge help when volunteers like YOU can host a donation drive to collect items for our kids. This is a fun way to give back that you can do by yourself, with your school, church or community group, with family, a group of friends or coworkers. There are some ideas below, but contact us if you are interested in our current need or have a new idea. Jackie, our Community Relations Director, loves to brainstorm ways groups can give back in a way that is most meaningful to them and our kids!
