ReStore volunteers bring new skills and build capacity to help provide discounted building materials and home goods to the community. Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs uses funds raised by the ReStore to help families build, rehabilitate and repair homes. By giving your time and talents, you help the Oak Forest ReStore do more to support homebuilding projects that benefit families in the area. If you have court-related community service hours to fulfill, please reach out to the Volunteer Manager by calling 630-757-7523 or email amercer@gohabitat.org. There are always things to do around the office. Sometimes it's filing papers, other times it's putting a binder together, or dropping candy into treat bags for patients (and you get to keep one for yourself!). Full training is provided and we understand that life happens when you volunteer... so if you get a phone call take it; if a friend wants to do lunch, go. We get it. All the work you do will be helping to support our patients and staff members as they take care of our hospice patients

The Outreach Volunteer Group builds connections with community organizations, libraries, schools, businesses, and other potential partners to raise awareness of the organization’s mission and programs. The Outreach Group works to recruit new learners and volunteers while fostering strategic partnerships that expand the organization’s reach and impact. Group members may participate in networking / Chamber events, community events, and informational presentations to engage diverse audiences and promote collaboration.

Marketing & Social Media Volunteer Group
The Marketing & Social Media Volunteer Group focuses on promoting the organization through compelling storytelling and consistent messaging. This team develops and oversees content for social media platforms, newsletters, and other communication channels to highlight success stories, volunteer opportunities, and upcoming events.

Fundraising & Event Planning Volunteer Group
The Fundraising & Event Planning Volunteer Group leads efforts to secure financial support through individual donations, corporate sponsorships, and special events. This team helps brainstorm, organize, and execute fundraising campaigns and events, ensuring they align with the organization’s goals and values. Members may assist with donor outreach, securing in-kind donations, event logistics, and post-event follow-up to cultivate lasting relationships with supporters.

Fermilab Natural Areas has volunteer opportunities available throughout the year.  Whether you love native plants, wildlife or everything about nature, we have a place for you to fit in that is suited to your interests and abilities.  It requires no special skill set and tools and instruction are always provided. Please wear long pants and toe enclosed shoes. Our regular workdays are Mondays 1:00pm - 3:00pm and every second Saturday of the month from 9:00am - 11:00 am. We meet throughout the year, except holidays. The workdays may be cancelled due to bad weather.

Please email us (fermilabnaturalareas@gmail.com) if you are interested in volunteering. Prior to attending, please fill our the volunteer form and found on our website. A signed parental waiver, also on our website, is required for those under 18. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

You need either a REAL ID driver's license or current passport to enter Fermilab.  Tell the security guard that you will be with Fermilab Natural Areas and will be working in public areas.  We meet at the NE corner of the Lederman Science Education Center's parking lot.

An ambassador represents Living Well at the cancer centers. This volunteer would speak to patients about our no-cost services and provide printed information to those interested. These are normally 2 - 3 hour shifts, and they can be any day, Monday through Friday. 

We accept volunteers who are fulfilling hours for a misdemeanor such as a traffic violation, DUI, minor drug or other non-violent offense that does not involve another person. We do not accept hours for harassment, theft, gun related charges or violent crimes. Please email me a photo of your court order that shows your case number and the offense that you need to complete community service for. Once we confirm it meets our criteria, we will send you a link to create an account in our system.

The Outreach House is always looking for Spanish speaking volunteers to assist our guests during open hours.

The Naperville Park District accepts volunteers looking to fulfill required volunteer service; pending approval from the Volunteer & Events Manager.

Although all have different reasons for volunteering, all Lightways volunteers are committed to providing unwavering support with the powerful positivity of light. Direct care volunteers provide services directly to patients and families. Volunteers will visit a patient’s private residence or a nursing home.  These services include:

* Patient/Family Support Volunteers visit patients and families in their home, or long-term care facility. Volunteers provide companionship to both patient and family caregivers.

* Veteran-to-veteran volunteers provide support from military veterans to veteran patients. Veterans often appreciate contact with another vet. 

* Pet Therapy Volunteers provide direct support to patients through visits with their certified therapy dogs.

We are looking for compassionate individuals to provide support to those impacted by cancer within our communities.

Front Desk volunteers will answer incoming calls and greet patients, caregivers and family members as they arrive for programs and services at Living Well.

They will also provide tours of the facility, assist with wig consultations, and complete other administrative tasks as needed.

Weekly shift availability includes: Monday through Thursday 10a-1p, 1p-5p or 5p-8p and Fridays 9a-12p.

Volunteers will assist with set-up, tear-down and leading small stations or activities to support event success. Events and programs will vary throughout the year and may include Flashlight Egg Hunt, Kite Fly, Junior Tour de Naperville, Halloween Happening, Santa's Workshop and more!

To provide safe and adequate child care for children of the residents of Jubilee Village Transitional Housing Program.

This is a great opportunity for families to serve together, so all age groups are welcome with the accompanying of a parent/guardian. This is also a great opportunity for students who are 13 years or older.

Child Care at Jubilee Village takes place every Wednesday  from 6:30-8:15 p.m. Volunteers have the flexibility of volunteering weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.

Without a vehicle and often with limited public transit options, refugees and immigrants who recently arrived in America experience significant transportation challenges. Step into this gap and become a Transportation Assistant, providing refugees and immigrants rides to important classes, trainings, interviews, and appointments! Volunteers help as often as their schedule allows—typically ranging from multiple times a week to a few times a year.

Transportation needs are often on weekdays during normal work hours (though evening needs also exist), so having daytime availability is ideal. Training is provided. **At this time, we do not have a need for airport transportation.**

Learning the English language is one of the most crucial skills for refugees and immigrants to thrive in America. As an English Language Tutor, you’ll practice conversational English and language skills with an adult refugee or immigrant and become friends in the process!

Tutors meet their student(s) in-person, typically at the student's home, or virtually for about 1 - 2 hours once a week for 6 months, walking through a short lesson that focuses on speaking and listening.

Training and materials are provided. No previous English teaching experience is necessary. Knowledge of another language is not necessary.

For those born with U.S. citizenship, it’s easy to overlook all the benefits it provides. But these benefits, including the right to vote and hold public office, are immense. World Relief Chicagoland hosts citizenship clinics to provide a low-cost opportunity for immigrant community members to apply for U.S. citizenship.

As a Citizenship Assistant, you’ll help eliminate barriers for those applying and enable our clinics to serve more individuals. Volunteers assist clients with completing their citizenship application (Form N-400) before it is reviewed by a legal representative and eventually submitted.

Clinics take place once a month from about 9 AM to 4 PM, alternating between Fridays at our DuPage office and Saturdays at partner sites in DuPage County and Aurora. Volunteers often serve half or full days on a monthly or semi-regular basis. Training is provided.

We rely on generous people within our community to donate goods for those being served through our programs. Below is information about these most needed items and ideas on how to help us meet the growing demand of the services we provide at HSP.

Hygiene Products

Every year we distribute over 2 TONS of hygiene products to our seniors and families. We are in need of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, and dental floss.

Paper Products

Collect paper products and donate them for use in our Senior Citizen Project. Providing these essentials allows for our seniors to utilize their limited income for other necessary bills. **We are now also providing these items to our families due to increased limiting of income.**

Over the course of the year we provide our seniors with: Over 9,500 Rolls of Toilet Paper, Over 6,200 Rolls/Boxes of Paper Towels and Tissues

Non Perishable Food

Throughout the course of the year HSP provides 123 TONS of food to the seniors, children and families enrolled in our programs. We are always in need of non-perishable food and are happy to provide you a list of items that we are most in need of.

The goal of the Children’s Project is to provide children with nutritional support at critical times of the year, a beautiful birthday box to celebrate their birthday, and school supplies for those children of school age. Below are items you can donate to help us reach our goal.

Toys and Books

Help us succeed in providing wonderful gifts to children for their birthday! Our greatest need are toys and books for children ages 8-12 (through age 15 at Christmas)! The goal is to create wonderful birthday and holiday memories to last a lifetime and to give children the opportunity to celebrate special days with their family.  Please no violence related toys or books.

School Supplies

Success in the classroom is possible when every child has the basic tools necessary to perform the work.  Year round we collect items for elementary school students: Notebooks, paper, folders, pens, pencils, crayons, markers, and backpacks.

Working virtually from your home or any relatively quiet location to pick up phone calls that come in for Cars of Hope. Usually less than 1 to 2 hours per week and some weeks it may only be one short call. You will take down information from anyone looking to donate a car to Cars of Hope or someone inquiring how to apply for a needed vehicle. We use Google voice which allows incoming calls to be forwarded to most phones.

Work location would be from your home or a location of your choice.

Cars of Hope does not have an in person working location and because of this we cannot accommodate community service requirements.

Gentiva Hospice is looking for people from all walks of life to hang out with one patient three hours per month (most often one hour per visit on three different days) as a patient visiting friend.

Work with patient three times per month, any days and times you choose, and spend one hour together each time you visit in person. We are flexible and can work with your schedule and availability and distance you are willing to travel. Full training is provided.

We have patients all over the Chicagoland area and you can choose how far you want to drive to see your hospice patient.  Must be able to pass drug screen, background check, physical and fingerprinting. We also need proof of a TB test within the last year. We provide them free of charge at our office in Oak Brook.

Direct care volunteers provide services directly to patients and families. Volunteers will visit a patient’s private residence or a nursing home.  These services include:

* Patient/Family Support Volunteers visit patients and families in their home, or long-term care facility. Volunteers provide companionship to both patient and family caregivers.

* Veteran-to-veteran volunteers provide support from military veterans to veteran patients. Veterans often appreciate contact with another vet. 

* Pet Therapy Volunteers provide direct support to patients through visits with their certified therapy dogs.

The Parents’ Pantry is a place where Teen Parent Connection participants can shop for baby and personal items. Young parents can earn “Baby Bucks” by attending Teen Parent Connection meetings, keeping up with your child’s immunizations, attending school, etc. They can then “spend” their “Baby Bucks” in the pantry in exchange for wipes, diapers, formula, baby clothes and personal hygiene products.

Literacy DuPage provides free, customized English tutoring to help adult learners reach their life skill goals.

DuPage County Literacy

Low literacy is defined as being unable to read, write, speak, compare and contrast, paraphrase, and make low-level inferences. All skills necessary to complete daily tasks.

According to the 2022 American Community Survey, in DuPage County:

§  53,162 adults do not have a high school diploma.

§  250,805 residents speak a language other than English at home.

§  87,614 speak English “less than well”.

§  70,756 residents live in poverty.

§  Additionally, children of parents with low literacy levels have a 72% chance of achieving only the lowest level of literacy when they become adults, creating a cycle of illiteracy and poverty that can span generations.

Who are our Learners?

Learners come to us with English language skills below ninth-grade level. Some are native English speakers, yet most are immigrants.

§  Our learner base represents 29 different native languages and 40 countries.

§  The average age of our learner is 43.

§  49% are seeking employment or are underemployed.

§  79% are female.

§  51% are parents of minor children.

§  60% of Literacy DuPage adult learners have some post-secondary education in their native language. However, many are unable to find careers in their fields of study due to their lack of English skills.

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly's (LBFE) philosophy, programs and activities are focused on alleviating loneliness and isolation among older adults in DuPage and Kane County. The need for social interaction is critical to the human spirit - we believe that nurturing the soul is as important as feeding the body. The older adults we engage with have little to no contact with family and/or friends and are living life alone. Volunteers support older adults in friendship through various activities and programs, such as in-person visiting, parties, and holidays. 

Regular in-person visiting is the best way to alleviate loneliness and isolation. LBFE is seeking volunteers that can visit an older adult in-person. Our goal is to connect people together in friendship. Volunteers needed to serve Seniors in our community with basic Money Management skills. Our volunteers go to Seniors' homes and assist with balancing checking accounts, making sure bills are paid, setting up autopay, and a variety of other tasks related to Money Management. The Money Management Coordinator supports the seniors and volunteers in an effective working relationship. Seniors are low income and are involved with other programs. They are assessed by the coordinator prior to a volunteer match.

Singers are invited to participate in choral ensembles for weekend liturgies. Rehearsals on Wednesdays, 7:00 - 8:15 pm. Masses on Saturdays, 5:00 or Sundays 8:00 or 10:00 am. A great opportunity to develop strong friendships!

For trained singers and instrumentalists, there are occasional paid opportunities at weddings, funerals, and special occasions.

Handbell choir meets Mondays 6:16 - 7:15 pm seasonally. Beginners and experienced members welcome.

Much of the donated food Northern Illinois Food Bank distributes needs to be inspected, sorted and packaged before it’s distributed to our hungry neighbors. We simply could not do this without the help of volunteers. Last year, volunteers donated more than 136,000 hours of their time, the equivalent of 64 full-time employees.

The children served by CASA of DuPage County have been removed from their homes, often in haste and leave behind many of their personal belongings.  In order to help bring comfort to their new surroundings, we collect gift cards for children and teens to purchase items such as personal incidentals, toiletries, clothing, or other needed items related to their everyday lives.  Gift cards give children and teens the power of choice to select what they would like.

CASA of DuPage County is looking for organizations, families or other groups to set up gift card collection programs in increments of $25 to places like Target, Walmart, Kohls, Amazon, or Meijer (or other similar stores) where children's families can purchase needed items.

Veterans have given a lot to our country and we thank you for your service!  Veterans also seem to relate to each other in ways the average person cannot. At the end of life there is a lot that can be stirred up, memories dislodged, or old feelings re-awakened. At Gentiva Hospice we know that end-of-life is experienced differently by our veterans which is why we pair them with veteran hospice patients. By end-of-life we mean that these veterans have a terminal illness and are probably in their last year of life (but not always).

As a veteran volunteer you will be matched with one veteran patient who will be your patient until he/she passes.

Meaningful words are spoken and the veteran patient and veteran volunteer both get a chance to share any stories about being in the service or what being a veteran has meant to them. We take some time to celebrate and honor the veterans and acknowledge their service and sacrifice for this country. 

Volunteer training and specialized veteran volunteer training is provided.

Gentiva Hospice is looking for people who are interested in volunteering their time for one hour on three separate days (three hours total per month) sitting with one of our hospice patients and talking with him/her and/or sharing a skill or talent that you have and/or just hanging out and doing whatever else makes you both happy.

Lonely and tired seniors need attention and companionship from you.

full training provided to everyone. volunteer near where you live or work even though our office is in Oak Brook. must be able to pass drug test, background check, and be fingerprinted. get as much help as you need. meet great people. make a difference.

no costs to you

Gentiva Hospice is looking for veterans who will volunteer for veterans who have a terminal illness and are probably in their last year of life. Vets understand other vets...that is why we are creating a taskforce to plan, set up for, and lead veteran pinning ceremonies where we thank veterans for their service and give them a pin, a certificate, cake/beverage, and allow all vets present to tell their story. The veterans who are pinned are so grateful; the pinnings mean a lot to them.

Full training provided. Must pass drug test & background check & fingerprinting. Pin veterans at the facilities and homes where they live. All military branches welcome. All questions answered.
