We are accepting donation of fleece to be used to create homemade baby blankets for sick or premature babies in the hospital. They will be donated to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or PICU/Emergency room where needed. Social workers and nursing staff assist in the delivery to families needing this gift of comfort. The fleece will be cut down into 1 yard increments, so please avoid any 1/2 yard pieces. For each yard of fabric, we are able to create one baby blanket. We prefer to use both a pattern and a coordinating solid fleece to create the blankets. In this case, 1 yard of a pattern with 1 yard of a coordinating solid would create 2 dual-sided baby blankets. However, we are open to taking any donated fleece and matching it to a pattern or solid that we have in stock. We love neutral solids (greys, whites, navy, black), but can use all colors. For the patterned fleece, please select options that would work well for a baby's blanket. We run the charity operations/blanket parties on evenings and weekends out of our home, so you can drop any fleece to our home address at: 945 Douglas Ave in Naperville, IL 60540. Please feel free to leave it on the front porch in a plastic bag to keep it safe from the weather. Going shopping for the fabric is a fun activity. At the end of life there is a lot that can be stirred up, memories dislodged, or old feelings re-awakened. At Gentiva Hospice we know that end-of-life is experienced differently by our veterans which is why we pair them with veteran hospice patients. By end-of-life we mean that these veterans have a terminal illness and are probably in their last year of life (but not always). As a veteran volunteer you will be matched with one veteran patient who will be your patient until he/she passes.
Pinning Ceremonies We will also do a veteran pinning ceremony for your veteran patient. He/She will be given a certificate and pinned. Meaningful words are spoken and the veteran patient and veteran volunteer both get a chance to share any stories about being in the service or what being a veteran has meant to them.
