Volunteer: Help Shape the Future of Adult Literacy—Board Leadership Opportunities Available

Are you passionate about changing lives through literacy and opening doors to opportunity in our community? As a Board Director with Literacy DuPage, you will help lead a nonprofit dedicated to empowering adults who are striving to improve their English, build confidence, and move forward with dignity. For many learners, everyday tasks—reading a bus schedule, completing a medical form, supporting a child’s education, or succeeding at work—can feel overwhelming without strong language skills.

By contributing your leadership, expertise, and perspective at the board level, you play a powerful role in shaping programs that break down language barriers and create pathways to independence and belonging. Together with fellow board members, staff, and volunteers, you will help guide an organization that believes in the transformative power of literacy.

About Literacy DuPage
Literacy DuPage is a nonprofit organization serving low-income adults in DuPage County who read below the ninth-grade level or speak English at a beginning level. We help learners improve their speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills so they can achieve their personal, educational, and workplace goals.

We recruit, train, and support volunteer tutors who provide customized, one-to-one instruction. Many learners face barriers to traditional education, including limited transportation, childcare responsibilities, work schedules, or challenges succeeding in a classroom setting. Tutor-learner pairs meet for up to two hours each week at a public library.

You can learn more about Literacy DuPage at www.literacydupage.org.

Position Summary:
We are seeking dynamic and engaged individuals to join our Board of Directors. This is an extraordinary opportunity to leverage your skills, expertise, and networks to make a meaningful impact in the lives of English language learners and the broader community.

The day-to-day operations are led by the Executive Director, the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is critical in achieving organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership: Actively participate in setting organizational direction and ensuring alignment with our mission and values.

Resource Development: Support fundraising initiatives, secure resources, and cultivate relationships with donors, corporate sponsors, and community partners.

Advocacy: Enhance the public image of Literacy DuPage and advocate for the importance of adult ESL and English-language tutoring within your networks and the community.

Governance: Ensure fiscal responsibility, legal compliance, and effective organizational policies through active oversight and informed decision-making.

Commitment: Attend board meetings, participate in committee work, and engage in special events and initiatives.

Other responsibilities

Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions.

Respect the experiences of all who bring their voices and lived experiences into the boardroom and the organization.

Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and disclose potential conflicts during meetings.

Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization.

Ideal Candidate Profile:
We welcome candidates from all backgrounds who are passionate about our mission. Experience in human resources, legal, or finance is a plus and will help strengthen our board’s collective expertise.

We seek individuals who:

Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively.

Have expertise in areas such as nonprofit governance, finance, marketing, fundraising, or community engagement.

Can volunteer 2-4 hours a month on Board/Committee/Task Force work – in addition to Board Meetings.

Make an annual financial contribution to Literacy DuPage that is personally meaningful and reflects your ability to give, with the understanding that board members are among the organization’s leadership donors.

Commit to a two-year term and complete a background check.

Volunteer: Crafting & Creating for Cats

Join us for an on-your-own-time, fun virtual opportunity! Perfect for students who need service hours, too.
If you are a crafty person, you can support our rescue by creating toys for the cats in our rescue (and to send home with them when they are adopted!), crafts for our fundraising sales, enrichment items for the cats in our care, and more. We recently created a short workbook of suggested projects and ideas - check it out here!
In addition, any funds earned from sales of donated items at craft fairs ore vents will be used to care for our existing cats and pay our vet bill, and this allows us to continue rescuing felines in need. If you have any experience with fundraising, or would like to help us generate ideas, please contact us - we'll be glad to have your input! Please visit our website, or ask any of our volunteers or adoption counselors if you have questions.
Donations of various kinds are always accepted, including: food for foster cats, toys (no hazardous/swallow-possible parts please), crates, carriers (hard sided and/or top loaders preferred), etc.

Chicagoland Animal Rescue, NFP is a small, all-volunteer cat rescue organization based out of the Downers Grove PetSmart at Butterfield & Finley Rd.

Clients Matter – their success is our success Giving Back Matters – our volunteers, stakeholders and sponsors, through their support of SCORE are giving back to their communities Volunteers Matter – our volunteers give freely of their time, energy and knowledge to help others. SCORE volunteers donate over one million hours of their time each year to support their communities Experience Matters – a client’s experience matters – the truest measure of our mission and our service—and we ensure our clients have a positive experience. A volunteers’ experience matters – their relevant knowledge, wisdom and experiences serve our clients through mentorship and education; and we ensure that volunteers find value and satisfaction while engaged with SCORE Relationship Matters – In our relationships with each other, clients and our partners, we act with integrity, respect, honesty, purpose and professionalism. We listen with an open mind, encourage and openly communicate with all people seeking help from SCORE. Personal, long-term relationships are a driver of small business success. Community alliances are critical to the success of SCORE Diversity Matters – We believe in the importance, value and power of diversity – diversity of people and diversity of thought. The diversity of race, gender, ethnicity, geography and experience is important and valuable in SCORE. We strive to achieve diversity of our volunteers, staff, board and clients. Lifelong Learning Matters – We believe that small business owners who are lifetime learners adapt to change more readily and are more successful. Volunteers as lifelong learners remain relevant, achiever personal satisfaction and growth.

Volunteer: Website/Social Media Manager

An ideal candidate for this role would have experience in managing a website changes and updates using Weebly. Our hope for role is to have someone help with website functionality that we are trying to add or change. For example, adding CAPTCHA to forms,  setting up automated responses, improving website SEO, and help with being more efficient with our social media messaging. We estimate the role would take zero hours some weeks and 2-4 hours (at the most) on weeks when we are making technical modifications.

Our website is completely operational and meets most of our needs, we require help for small changes and integration of marketing projects. We currently have a college intern helping in this area who is a Communications major. He is very creative, possesses graphic art skills and some technical skills. He is a quick learner and is a joy to work with. This work may be done over the phone or in person.

Volunteer: Girl Scout Champions Needed!

Girl Scout Champions help introduce Girl Scouts to girls and families in local communities.  They play a vital role in helping our schools and communities learn about Girl Scouts.  Girl Scout Champions show girls and adults how to get involved and join the fun!

The role of the Girl Scout Champion is available to anyone who is willing to become a member of Girl Scouts and has completed a background check. Champions are appointed by their local community/Service Unit Manager because they are familiar with their community (or are willing to learn) and are excited about meeting people and making new connections.

Girl Scout Champions will work closely with local volunteers and council staff to promote the mission and benefits of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.  Champions actively engage adults and girls in assigned areas to join Girl Scouts.

How do Girl Scout Champions accomplish this? By:

Hosting Girl Scout information/recruitment tables at local schools, park districts, libraries or places of worship. Organizing Girl Scout activity tables at community, church, or school events; fairs/carnivals, parades,  and seasonal community family events. Attend Girl Scout Champion training.
