We Can Build It!

DuPage Habitat for Humanity has been building up the community since 1995. Join DuPage Habitat on the construction site to work side-by-side with future homebuyers to build and rehab homes for their families. We are currently building and rehabbing townhomes in Hanover Park. If you have court-related community service hours to fulfill, please reach out to the Volunteer Manager by calling 630-757-7523 or email amercer@gohabitat.org. We will not verify any hours completed until after you have been approved. 

Volunteer activities can include anything it takes to build a home from start to finish. Typical volunteer activities include framing, siding, painting, roofing, laying flooring, hanging doors or windows, trim work, finishing, landscaping, and cleaning. We mean it when we say – every single task is critical for the success of our mission.

Habitat provides all the tools, building materials, and training for your volunteer day; no construction experience is needed. 

In recognition of federal labor laws regarding children and the potential risk to children’s safety on a construction site, no one under the age of 16 is allowed on a construction site while construction is going on. Further, no one under the age of 18 should be allowed to do any ultra-hazardous activities, which include the use of power tools or motor vehicles, demolition, roofing or working from a height of six feet or more, or excavation operations. 

The minimum age to volunteer on a DuPage Habitat build site is 16 years old. Volunteers who are 16 or 17 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who will also be volunteering that day. All minors signing up will be prompted to provide their legal guardian's name and email address for a waiver to be sent for them to electronically sign. Once signed, the minor can finish registering for their volunteer shift.

Build Day Schedule

7:45 - 8:00 AM: Arrival 8:05 AM: Site orientation and mandatory safety talk 12:00 PM: Break for lunch (Please bring your own) 2:30-3:00 PM: Start site cleanup and closing remarks

What to Wear/Bring

Sturdy, closed-toed shoes Layers of clothes you can get dirty/paint on (jeans or shorts, t-shirt, jacket) Hat with a brim/sunscreen

Street parking is available on Greenbrook Court (not in the cul-de-sac)

Crew leaders teach and guide small crews of construction volunteers through tasks such as rough and finish carpentry, windows, siding, insulation, drywall, painting, landscaping, and more. Build days take place Wednesday through Saturday each week, unless otherwise specified. As a Crew Leader, you are integral to our goals of building more homes and empowering neighborhoods, communities and future homeowners in our DuPage Service area. 

Core Responsibilities: 

Complete hands-on construction tasking including, but not limited to, site prep, framing, roofing, carpentry, landscaping, and clean up (primarily November through March)Lead a group of volunteers to complete tasks assigned by the site supervisor (primarily April through October) Ensure work is completed in a safe manner Help with larger community or affiliate events 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

A passion for helping and teaching othersA base knowledge of tools and construction/home repair
Teaching and group facilitation skills 

Physical Requirements:

Ability to be on one's feet for extended periods of time, sometimes on rough and uneven terrainAbility to lift at least 50 lbs on occasionAbility to work on ladders and heights of up to two stories on occasionAbility to work in varying weather conditions - sites may be unheated during winter and not air-conditioned during summer

Time Frame:

7:45 AM - 2:30 PM is a typical build day  Crew Leaders take on at least 1 shift a month

Training:

3 days on the build site with the site supervisors to assess skill level 3-5 day showing a group build day to assess teaching and facilitation skills
