Who We Are
The GardenWorks Project (GWP) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization addressing food insecurity in DuPage County through food growing. We educate and empower individuals, families and communities facing food insecurity to grow their own fresh produce, we facilitate produce donations from backyard gardeners and local farmers to local food pantries. We also provide programming to educate audiences about food growing, food waste, and ways everyone can help to create a more food secure communities.
According to IMPACT DuPage’s County Health Assessment, 1 in 8 DuPage County residents do not have reliable access to affordable, nutritious food. The GardenWorks Project addresses this critical issue by providing a sustainable solution, engaging with community stakeholders to grow healthy produce directly where it’s most needed and partnering with home growers and farmers to divert excess during the growing season.
We began in 2011 with an idea and in 2012 four home gardens were installed for families facing food insecurity. In our 15th growing season, GWP has evolved into over 150 garden beds in 26 locations.
We rely on volunteers, donors and sponsors to accomplish this critical work. We have volunteer opportunities in and out of the garden, and sponsorship opportunities throughout the year.
