Who We Are
Our Mission: to help immigrant and refugee families thrive by connecting them to care, advocacy, support and community. Our Vision: a society where immigrants and refugees are welcomed, empowered, and treated as equals with kindness, dignity and respect. All of our beneficiaries are immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees. These folks are generally without sufficient resources, if any, upon arrival in the U.S. For the most part, the families have escaped extreme violence with little more than the clothes on their backs. They might not speak English fluently, if at all, and have no idea how to access community resources and social services, or that they even exist. They are alone and without the tools to build new lives for themselves and their families. The grassroots group 6000 MOMS formed in June 2018 in reaction to forced family separations at the southern border and the sight of terrified children in cages. The name stems from the group’s inception as a spin-off of a Facebook group called “Wheaton Moms,” which then included 6,000 members. Not all our members are literally moms, and we are not yet 6,000 in number; we currently have over 4,200 members, however, and continue to grow. State of IL incorporation was filed in January 2021, and 501(c)(3) status was approved in June 2021.
What We Do
6000 MOMS NFP is a gathering of women committed to creatively pursuing all avenues by which we can assist, comfort, and defend those seeking legal asylum in the U.S., as well as those negatively affected by our current immigration system. We do not define ourselves by political party or religion, but are each led by our own personal beliefs to our unified purpose. With a focus on families and individuals resettling in DuPage County and the greater Chicagoland area, our member volunteers - locally, across the U.S., and beyond our borders - work together to help immigrant families thrive. Through volunteer “Care Teams,” we provide comprehensive and holistic aid to those in need of support. The ongoing work of the Care Teams, along with calls for urgent needs response and special projects, harness the unique talents, creativity, generosity and collaborative efforts of the 6000 MOMS membership to accomplish life-changing work.
