Description

Green Halo Scholars is seeking thoughtful, community-minded leaders to join our Board of Directors. Our mission is simple and powerful: we walk alongside first-generation and low-income high school seniors from the western suburbs as they take their next steps to and through college. Our Board provides strategic leadership, guidance, and stewardship that help make this work possible.

While day-to-day operations are led by Green Halo Scholar’s executive director, the Board-ED partnership is at the heart of our growing organization. Board members play an essential role in shaping where Green Halo is headed and ensuring we stay rooted in our mission and values while meeting the needs of our community.

Leadership, Governance and Oversight

  • Serve as a trusted partner to the Executive Director as they implement Green Halo Scholar’s 2026-2029 strategic plan and lead us into our ten-year anniversary in 2027
  • Participate in committees, task forces, and special projects.
  • Engage with Green Halo events, from our scholar programming to fundraising events like our annual Pickleball Friend-raiser, helping to celebrate scholar achievements, build community connections, and support our fundraising goals.
  • Represent Green Halo Scholars in the community – serving as an ambassador who shares our story and impact.
  • Review and approve the annual budget and major organizational decisions; stay informed and uphold all legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Understand our mission, programs, needs, and purpose – and help us ensure we stay focused on the scholars and families we serve.
  • Support the recruitment of future Board Members who bring the skills, perspectives, and passion needed for our next chapter.
  • Champion Green Halo’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflect the communities we partner with.
  • Come prepared for and actively participate in board meetings and executive sessions.
  • Engage in learning opportunities that deepen your understanding of first-generation students, the college access/success landscape, and equity-centered practices.

Fundraising

Green Halo Scholars Board Members consider Green Halo a top philanthropic priority. To model the commitment we ask of others, we aim for 100% board participation in giving each year. Members make or raise an annual contribution of at least $1,500, or an amount that reflects their personal capacity.

Board members also open doors – leveraging networks, relationships, and resources that strengthen our impact and fuel our mission.

Qualifications

We’re looking for leaders who share our belief in the potential of every young person and will bring expertise that will help guide Green Halo into the future. Ideal candidates will have:

  • Significant leadership experience in business, law, education, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. We’re especially interested in adding board members with experience inhuman resources, law, and corporate philanthropy.
  • A commitment to first-generation and low-income students, with an understanding of the challenges and opportunities they face.
  • Integrity, credibility, and a passion for our mission, bringing heart and energy to the work we do for our scholars and their families.
  • Excited to grow with us – join a growing organization where your time, ideas, and energy will directly help shape our programs, expand our impact, and support our scholars’ journeys

Interested candidates should email info at greenhaloscholars dot org with their resume and a brief statement about why they're interested in serving on the Green Halo Scholars board.
